Week beginning 16th May 2022
Whisper it, but this week has really felt like the good old years before COVID. Year 6 SATs complete, Year 2 SATs well on their way, lots of teachers at meetings about moderating results and lots of curriculum planning for next year. More importantly, Ravenswood is back to doing all of the things that make it such an exciting school to be a pupil at.
On Monday, nine of our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils went to the North Tyneside and Newcastle Primary Panathlon Challenge at the Lakeside Centre. The children took part in six different sporting activities across the event and all came back with big, shiny medals and big, shiny smiles. They had a great time and were a credit to the school.
On Tuesday, Year 6 went on a trip to the Ouseburn to look at our local river and find out about the fascinating history of the Ouseburn Valley. Did you know that the valley was the centre of glassmaking in the 17th century and glassware was exported all over the world from here? Did you know that the City Stadium in Shieldfield is built on a great big pile of rubbish collected and dumped there around 1900? For more exciting information, just ask a Year 6 pupil!
On Wednesday we all smiled beautifully for our class photo, which will be available to buy soon after half term. Nursery then dashed off to Whitehouse Farm, where they were incredibly well behaved and had a fantastic day. The staff at Whitehouse Farm were fantastic with the children and they all commented on what a lovely group we had.
On Wednesday afternoon our Year 6 cycling team went out to take part in the city competition. They took part in a time trial, a skills course and a ramps course. It sounded really exciting and the children loved the experience. Special congratulations to Zaine who was our “cyclist of the day” for completing a see-saw on his bike! Final placings following the complex scoring system are still to be announced. You can see more details on the Sports, Competitions and Festivals section in the Parents drop down menu.
On Thursday, we hosted a football competition for four of our Ouseburn Learning Trust schools. Hotspur, Chillingham Road and Christ Church joined our team for an evening of sport. Ravenswood were unbeaten and kept a clean sheet.
On Friday, three gymnastics teams and some individual gymnasts went to represent Ravenswood at the city competition. Teams from Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 took part in the event and did extremely well in remembering their routines under pressure. We came away with first place in all age groups and first, second, third and fifth in the individual competition. This means that everyone qualifies for the county finals next week. Wow!
On Friday we also welcomed families in to our Reception classes for Family Friday. We haven’t held one of these events for so long and so it was lovely to see everybody. The children were very excited to share their work with you all.
What a great week.
Here is an early warning. Next week is the final week of the half term. We break up at 3:15 on Friday 27th May and return to school on TUESDAY 7th JUNE. This extra day is due to the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. Speaking of which, we will be having a Red, White and Blue Day on Friday next week to celebrate the event. I have sent an email with details to all families.
